Aircraft Loaders are responsible for efficiently and safely loading and unloading cargo, baggage, and other materials onto and from aircraft. This role plays a crucial part in the timely turnaround of flights and requires attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to work in a fast-paced airport environment.

Tasks required include:

  • Load and unload cargo, baggage, and mail onto/from aircraft in accordance with loading plans and weight distribution guidelines..
  • Ensure proper securing of items to prevent damage during transportation..
  • Operate ground support equipment, such as conveyor belts, tow tractors, and loaders, to move cargo and baggage between the terminal and aircraft..
  • Conduct routine maintenance checks on equipment..
  • Adhere to strict safety guidelines and procedures for aircraft loading and ground operations..
  • Conduct safety checks on equipment and report any issues promptly..
  • Verify and document the weight, quantity, and type of cargo and baggage being loaded onto the aircraft..
  • Complete required paperwork and reports in compliance with regulatory requirements..
  • Assist in guiding arriving and departing aircraft to and from parking positions using hand signals or electronic communication devices..
  • Coordinate with other ground personnel to ensure safe aircraft movement..
  • Maintain effective communication with air traffic control, pilots, and other ground personnel..
  • Relay information regarding cargo and baggage movements, delays, or other relevant details..
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations, such as aircraft malfunctions or incidents during loading..
  • Follow established emergency protocols and coordinate with relevant authorities..
  • Provide assistance to passengers with special needs during boarding or disembarkation..
  • Handle oversized or irregularly shaped baggage..
  • Stay updated on industry regulations, safety protocols, and aircraft loading procedures..
  • Participate in training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge..
  • Contribute to the efficient turnaround of flights by ensuring timely and accurate loading and unloading processes..
What are the entry requirements for a Aircraft Loader?

There are no formal academic entry requirements, though employers may require entrants to possess GCSEs/S grades for some posts. Training is provided Off and on-the-job. Vocational qualifications in Aviation Operations on the Ground at Level 2 and 3 and apprenticeships are available.
